Celia Thaxter

By Laura Knoy on Monday, October 18, 2004.

She was born in Portsmouth, NH in the 1800s, but soon moved with her father to a lighthouse on the Isles of Shoals. As a young woman, she married and moved to Massachusetts, but it was a poem she wrote to a friend years later recalling her time on the islands that launched her career as one of New England's most popular poets. We're looking at the life of Celia Thaxter- author, painter, gardener and poet. Laura's guest is Norma Mandel, lecturer in the Education Program at Barnard College and author of "Beyond the Garden Gate: The Life of Celia Laighton Thaxter".
