Behind the Scene with NASCAR Families

A week after competing in Loudon NASCAR drivers are in Pennsylvania this weekend for the series' next race. For most of them, their families are also back on the road after a few days at home.

NHPR's Rachel Estabrook spoke with two family members of racers who've seen the country one racetrack at a time.

Maine Sentencing Options Ease Jail Crowding

According to the latest federal statistics, New Hampshire has the lowest rate in New England of people behind bars or under parole or probation. But among the people under any form of correctional supervision, New Hampshire puts the highest percentage in jail or prison.

In Maine, non-violent offenders are spending less time behind bars, as jail administrators around the state take advantage of diversion programs now required by laws passed in the last legislative session.

Self-Portrait with Turtles

David M. Carroll is a writer, artist, and naturalist who has been studying turtles near his Warner home for over 30 years. He wrote a series of three books about turtles and their wetland habitats that is known as the Wet Sneaker Trilogy, but now he�s turned his powers of observation inward. In his memoir, Self-Portrait with Turtles, David talks about his first, life-defining encounter with a turtle at the age of eight, his college years, and what the future may hold for him and the turtles that are living on ever shrinking land.

DNC Wrap Up - What's Next?

Coping with Trauma in Sierra Leone

and her husband David Baughan visited Sierra Leone. They wanted to help create a more comfortable learning atmosphere for students who've been on both sides of the aggression there. Jennifer is a trauma specialist and David is a playwright and author with a background in healthcare. We'll talk about their experience in Africa and about David's new book, Sophia's Journey.

Mil-Foiled!

Over sixty Granite State lakes and rivers have been invaded by milfoil. It clogs our lakes, chokes our plant and wildlife and makes swimming and boating nearly impossible. We�ll look at some new approaches to eradicate this tough exotic plant and look to ways to prevent further outbreaks from happening in the future. Laura's guests are Joel Harrington, Environmental Policy Director for The New Hampshire Lakes Association. Jody Connor, Director of the Limnology Center for The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. Lionel Chute, Administrator for The Natural Heritage Bureau for the Division of Forests and Lands and a member of the New Hampshire Invasive Species Committee. Londonderry Softballers Head to World Series

Tomorrow morning, a girls softball team from Londonderry is heading to Louisiana to play for the national title in the Babe Ruth League. The Londonderry Live Wires are aged 14 to 16 years old. They qualified for the World Series by winning the New England tournament.

Prisoners Sue for Mental Health Services

Six inmates at the New Hampshire State Prison filed a lawsuit against the State for not providing adequate mental health services. Specifically, the suit charges that the State has failed to live up to a series of court settlements dating back to 1990.
