Forty Years of Sgt. Pepper

Most critics and fans agree that The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was one of the most groundbreaking rock 'n' roll albums of all time. We'll explore the record's music and it's place in history.

We'll speak with Tim Riley, author of Tell Me Why: A Beatles Commentary and editor of the Riley Rock Index.

We'll also hear the inside story of two songs that were slated for the Sgt. Pepper album. Producer Paul Ingles brings us his radio documentary, Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane: Best Single Ever?.

The Music of Robert Johnson

Delta Blues master Robert Johnson is often credited as the father of Rock and Roll. His work had a huge influence on musicians like Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and the members of Led Zeppelin, just to name a few. But Johnson lived a very short life in near obscurity. We'll look back on his music, his legacy and his legend with blues historian and musician Scott Ainslie. Scott will perform at the Roots on the River Festival on Thursday, June 7th.

Pirates!

Moviegoers are lining up to see the last installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Tonight on the Front Porch, we're going to look at the real-life pirates that set the mold for all the fictional swashbucklers that have come since. We'll talk with Maine author Colin Woodard about his new book, The Republic of Pirates. It explores the lives and times of the men who carved out a reckless democracy at sea. Memorial Day Special: Vietnam Blues

Tonight on the Front Porch, we're preempting our usual program to bring you a Memorial Day special. Vince Gabriel is a Maine-based blues musician who's written an album of songs chronicling his experience in the Vietnam war. In this documentary produced by Tina Antolini, Vince takes listeners chronologically through his time in Vietnam, with his music leading us into stories about getting drafted, arriving in the jungle, the loss of his closest friend, and the relief of finally returning home.

Advice to the Graduates: Former Presidents at UNH

Twinemen

Dana Colley and Billy Conway took their signature sound from the band Morphine and re-formed themselves with some help into Twinemen. All four members of Twinemen including singer/guitarist Laurie Sargent and visiting bass player Kimon Kirk will be in the studio tonight to talk about their new CD and the mix of jazz, blues, rock and lounge that's found on it.

Poet Jack McCarthy Returns

Poet Jack McCarthy has made a name for himself doing what he calls stand up poetry. He's in New England this month for readings around the region. We'll talk with him about his work and his past, as he describes it in his new chap book "disGrace Notes: Confessions of a Relapsing/Remitting Catholic."

Novelist Joe Hurka

In his book Before, novelist Joseph Hurka tells a tale of terror and loss, and the role that memory can play in our lives. We'll talk with the award-winning author about the ways he weaves his father's experiences as a young resistance fighter in Czechoslavaki under Hitler into a 21st century story, on the eve of 9/11. We'll explore the ways memory guides three very different characters in the shadows of terror.

Apple Hill Chamber Players

The Apple Hill Chamber Players have earned a reputation for their top notch performances and musical ability . But sounding good isn't their main objective. Instead, their mission is to bring peace on Earth through music. That's a pretty straightforward goal, but it's also pretty daunting. We'll find out how the members of Apple Hill have been using their instruments and musical know-how to try and overcome age-old conflicts around the world. They'll join us in the studio for a performance and conversation.

Bill Morrissey

Bill Morrissey's albums have been selling in record stores for decades. Now he's bypassing all that and selling his new cd, "Come Running" himself. We're going to talk with Bill Morrissey about the business of using his concerts and his website to get the new work out there. He'll play some tunes off the new cd while he's in the studio.
