The Art of Conversation

By Liz Bulkley on Monday, July 9, 2007.

They say talk is cheap. Tonight on the Front Porch, we'll meet two men who couldn't disagree more. Author Stephen Miller says the art of conversation is dying, and that TV and talk radio are partially to blame. We'll have him on our radio show to explain what he means. And we'll meet with Writer Philip Gulley. He attributes the decline of conversation to architectural trends. He says when builders started leaving the front porches off of new homes, they inadvertently shut-down neighborly discourse.

Stephen Miller is author of Conversation: A History of a Declining Art

Philip Gulley is author of the Porch Talk series of books and host of Porch Talk with Phil Gulley on the TV show Across Indiana. It airs on PBS affiliate WFYI.
