Health Insurers to Stop Paying Hospitals for Medical Mishaps

Starting this year, a few health insurers in the state say they’ll stop paying hospitals for conditions caused by medical mishaps.

Last year, Medicare implemented similar rules.

Proponents say that the trend will likely boost patient safety and lower healthcare costs.

Jaye Foucher, The Shredding Sledder

Ashland, New Hampshire resident Jaye Foucher is competing in this year's annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in Minnesota.

The race began Sunday and runs through Wednesday.

As she was preparing for the race, NHPR Correspondent Sean Hurley caught up with her and learned a bit about dog sledding and Foucher's musical talents.

Adequacy Commission Closes In on Cost

The Library of Congress Meets Flickr

The Library of Congress has posted about 3100 photos to the popular image-sharing website Flickr. Archivists hope the move will let them tap into the knowledge of the masses and help them identify some of the people and places in those old photos.

Word of Mouth host Virginia Prescott talks about this pilot project with Matt Raymond, Director of Communications at the Library of Congress, and David Weinberger, Fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. David is the author of Everything is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder.

Psychiatrist Says New HBO Program Gets it Right

HBO unveils its brand new series In Treatment tonight. The show focuses on one psychiatrist – Dr. Paul Weston – and his regular patients. The show will run Monday through Friday, and each episode will center around one of his office visits. (Friday’s episodes will feature Dr. Weston’s appointments with his own psychiatrist.)

NHPR Haiku

Each year around this time Bill Littlefield and the Only a Game crew write and perform haiku to celebrate the big game and the surrounding spectacle.

During our Winter Member Drive we were giving away a trip to the game in Phoenix, and so we decided to write our own haiku. We don't pretend to be a Zen master of haiku like Bill Littlefield, but we had a good time.

Among the issues: the state budget – and how big that deficit really is; also, tax credits to boost the North Country economy, a new health care initiative, appointing several new commissioners, and Granite State participation in the RGGI environmental program.
