President’s Day is a good time to think about the power of the executive branch to shape our nation's future. Right now we're in the midst of a campaign season in which "hope" seems to be the key word. To appreciate just how much power a presidential candidate has to rally the American people, visit the video blog Big Think. There, modern political philosopher Michael Sandel of Harvard discusses how, as a young man, he was inspired by Robert Kennedy and the promise he offered this country:

Would You Pay Your Kids for Good Grades?

Getting your kids to study can involve begging, yelling, maybe even threatening punishment – sometimes to no end. Often, even the best and brightest kids don’t feel like dealing with school work. That’s why some parents (and school districts) are offering money to students who get good grades. Word of Mouth host Virginia Prescott speaks with parent and blogger Elisa Batista about the relatively new trend of trading cash for grades. Elisa writes for the website Mother Talkers.

Worm Farming in New Hampshire

Winter in New Hampshire is typically serious downtime for the state's gardeners.

It's only made tougher when so much of the ground is covered with so... much... snow.

Most have to content themselves with seed catalogues as they plan for that distant spring.

But some locals have discovered the satisfactions - and the many uses - of an unusual garden-related activity.

Good Friday, 1865: Lincoln’s Last Day

The Exchange takes a break for this Presidents' Day special. Good Friday, 1865: Lincoln’s Last Day depicts the events around the Lincoln assassination… from the feelings of our nation days after the Civil War ended, to the character and beliefs of our sixteenth president to the eerie events that preceded Lincoln’s death. This radio play was produced before a live audience at the Museum of Television and Radio in New York City and its producer Craig Wichman was a recipient of a National Audio Theatre Best Script "Grand Prize" for this show.
