A Plan to Renovate the Portsmouth Naval Prison

The historic but run-down Portsmouth Navy Yard prison may once again be up for commercial lease.

Dating back to 1908, it’s known as the Castle.

And during more than 60 years of use, it’s held tens of thousands of prisoners.

But the building that looms over all others in the shipyard has been empty for decades.

And the Navy wants to find a use for it.

NHPR Correspondent Roger Wood reports.

Communities Prepare for Possible Spring Flooding

New Hampshire communities avoided major flooding this weekend.
But as the state’s near-record snowfall begins to melt, emergency management officials are keeping a close watch on the weather and the rising rivers.
As New Hampshire Public Radio’s Amy Quinton reports, officials in one flood-prone community hope they’re better prepared this spring.

Town Meeting Roundup

As town meeting season reaches its peak, we’ll see what major topics voters will chew on along with homemade casseroles and cookies. There are the perennial subjects of money for fire trucks and road repair, but we’ll also find out how much the housing crisis and the near-record snowfall is putting pressure on this year’s budgets, and check in on a wide range of concerns, including a proposal to change New Hampshire’s tax structure.
