Mike Whalley Memorial

By Dan Gorenstein on Monday, March 3, 2008.

Republicans and Democrats are mourning the death of Republican House leader Mike Whalley.

The eight term Representative had been diagnosed with a brain tumor last fall.

He died from complications due to a recent fall.

The governor has ordered all flags on state buildings to fly at half staff Wednesday and Thursday.

New Hampshire Public Radio’s Dan Gorenstein has this remembrance.

TOWN MEETING 2008

Map | About the project | Help

With help from many people we assembled a sampling of some of the items on the warrant this March. We hope you find this list helpful and we hope you will use this page to post a comment on specific items. Three big points:

  • If you post a comment, keep your subject to just one warrant article. You can post as many separate comments as you like; our goal is to keep the online discussion organized in the same way that a town meeting goes through warrant articles one at a time.
  • You can comment on any warrant article whether it is on this short list or not. The goal of this list is just to get the conversation started but you are free to draw attention to any item that you think is important.
  • If you post a comment, please give your full name at the bottom, just as you'd have to state your name at town meeting.

The Interactive Town Meeting Map

By Jon Greenberg on Monday, March 3, 2008.

Next week, residents in most New Hampshire towns will take part in town meeting season. They will vote on budgets and items as specific as a new contract for back hoe services. All told, their decisions will affect some four and half billion dollars worth of spending statewide.

In a joint effort with New Hampshire’s Local Government Center, NHPR invited every town to submit just a few highlights of items on the warrant and we put that information into an interactive map on our web site. Executive Editor Jon Greenberg has been looking at what’s come in so far and joins us now.

Charter School Funding

By Laura Knoy on Monday, March 3, 2008.

As federal start-up grants for local charter schools dwindle, many are looking to the state to keep them afloat. But given the current budget shortfall, there’s still debate over whether to throw them a life vest. This week could be make-or-break for several charter schools in the Granite State. We’ll look at where new funds could come from and discuss possible solutions to the charter school crisis.
