Timeless Folk

By Kate McNally on Monday, August 18, 2008.

I had an opportunity to see a rising star, Sarah Jarosz, (pronounced JaROSE) at the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival. She’s only 16 years old and has shared the stage with some of the best bluegrass musicians around. At Grey Fox she was sharing the Masters Stage with David Grisman and Ronnie McCoury. She plays mandolin, claw hammer banjo and guitar and has a voice that has the soul of seasoned performer. She just signed with Sugar Hill records and should be putting out an album sometime in the near future. Visit her myspace page and sample her playing for yourself.

Sparrows vs. Pigeons

By Kate McNally on Wednesday, July 23, 2008.

I bumped into Andrew in the coffee shop the other day and we discovered we were going to the same festival where Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet were performing. He said he thought the band was "amazing" and "hypnotic". Their new album is self-titled on the Nettwerk label and features Abigail Washburn on banjo and vocals, Bela Fleck on banjo, Casey Driessen on fiddle and Ben Solee on cello. So, that Sunday night, I featured the album. Honestly, I was torn.
