The Capriccio Festival of Kites on Ogunquit Beach, a joyous part of the arts.

27th Annual Capriccio Ogunquit's Festival of the Arts, September 8 - 17, 2017 showcasing Ogunquit's rich cultural heritage. Capriccio is defined as "a joyous musical composition or work of art, in free form, and brilliant in style." It's a perfect title for Ogunquit's town-wide Festival of the Arts, this year marking its 27th year of celebrating and saluting Ogunquit's wonderful arts organizations and all the volunteers and staff which make them possible. Coordinated by Ogunquit Performing Arts, the Festival will run from September 8th through September 17th, 2017, throughout Ogunquit. Participants will include the major arts organizations in town, art galleries, service organizations and local businesses. Events will include concerts, films, new exhibits and receptions, historical look-backs, special tours of theatres and art galleries, and the art of kite-flying. The Capriccio Calendar of Events includes the following organizations and dates: OGUNQUIT PERFORMING ARTS opens the Festival on Friday, September 8th at 8:00 pm, presenting the international bass-baritone Erik Kroncke in a program entitled "Broadway Songs and Opera Favorites". From "South Pacific" to "Don Giovanni", Erik Kroncke explores music written for the bass voice in opera, songs, and musical theater. Accompanied by pianist Mary Jane Austin, Kroncke covers many composers, genres, and styles, guaranteeing that his audience will hear both familiar favorites and new discoveries. Since his debut in 2000, Erik Kroncke’s unique bass voice has been in demand by opera companies and orchestras all over the world. His symphonic and oratorio performances have included engagements with the New York Philharmonic, Danbury Symphony Orchestra, Chautauqua Symphony, Vermont Philharmonic, and the American Classical Orchestra in such varied repertoire as the Shostakovich 13th, Haydn’s the Seasons, as well as “The Three Basses” concerts. At the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street. OGUNQUIT PLAYHOUSE is offering a Capriccio special, - Buy-One-Get-One-Free tickets for performances of "Heartbreak Hotel" during Capiccio week. This world-premiere from the creator of the Tony Award-winning Million Dollar Quartet is a brand new tribute to Elvis Presley during the early years of his career as he created the music that changed the world. This musical features hit songs from the King himself as well as the legends who influenced his iconic music, with chart-toppers including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Tutti Frutti,” “That’s All Right Mamma,” “Shake Rattle and Roll,” and, of course, “Heartbreak Hotel.” The Playhouse is also offering backstage tours September 8th, 10th and 15th. Tours are open to the public, and cost $10 for a full 90 minutes behind the scenes. Volunteer guides will share their extensive knowledge of the storied history of the Playhouse and the hundreds of stars who have graced the stage. CAPRICCIO FESTIVAL OF KITES, Saturday, September 9, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at Ogunquit Beach, is presented by Ogunquit Camera Shop, Ogunquit Rotary Club, Kennebunk Savings Bank, Town of Ogunquit. This delightful, annual Festival features professional kite flying demonstrations, kite decorating contests for children, and the climactic Grand Ascension, filling the sky with everyone's kite in the air at the same time. Kites are available for sale at the beach, and are provided free for the children's contest. Rain date: Sunday, September 10. The LEAVITT THEATRE celebrates Capriccio with live entertainment and the screening of special films during the Festival. On Monday, September 11, Capriccio Night at the Leavitt will present Live Jazz with Joe Rillo, 10 pm to 12 am.
