Health providers, small business owners and reform advocates attended a brainstorming session in Concord on Friday. State Insurance Department officials organized the event, seeking input on how best to implement the new health exchange in New Hampshire.

A range of ideas were offered, from social media campaigns to informational events at hardware stores to old-fashioned word of mouth. Participants stressed a need to reach all communities, including minority and non-English speaking groups, and to do so quickly.

For Northern Pass Crossing Conservation Land Would Mean A Long And Rocky Legal Road

In 2003 state and federal officials, a private land owner and conservation groups created a conservation easement to protect about 146,000 acres in northern Coos County from development.

It is called the Connecticut Lakes Headwaters and some opponents of Northern Pass fear the utility hopes to cross it to send hydro-electric power south from its partner – Hydro-Quebec.

But getting permission to do that would be a complicated procedure with so many hurdles it would be the longest of long shots, according to those familiar with such easements.

We tagged along with Diane DeLuca, a biologist with NH Audubon on her rounds of the Deering Wildlife Sanctuary. DeLuca has been working on their Phenological Monitoring Pilot Project, and defines phenology as "the study of 'phenophases', which are the different phases that plants and animals go through in their life cycle each year."

With birds tuning up for the breeding season ahead, here are some memory tricks to help you recognize a few of the more common songs.

Robins can be heard in just about all habitats across the state and the nation. Their whistled song is often translated as, "Cheer-up. Cheerily. Cheerio."

Another song easy to "translate" is the flight song of goldfinches. Someone somewhere interpreted it as, "Potato chip! Potato chip!"

On the night of February 27^th, 1971, dressed in a vintage fur coat, Susan Randall, met up with a friend for pizza. After leaving the restaurant, shortly after midnight, a woman fitting Randall's description was observed hitchhiking near Manchester’s Granite Square. Witnesses say a white car driven by a lone man stopped to pick her up.

Randall’s body, badly beaten and naked from the waist down, would be found two days later, thrown from a bridge onto the frozen Merrimack River in Concord.

A month after the Boston Marathon bombings, a Nashua husband and wife injured in the blast are raising money for mounting medical costs.

But they are also still dealing with the psychological impact of the tragedy.

After the Boston Marathon bombing, Martha Galvis lost the ring finger on her left hand and nearly had to have her left leg amputated.

She’s had four surgeries on her hand and is due for a fifth next week.

Delaney will join the firm later this month as a director in the litigation practice group.

McLane’s Managing Partner Dick Samuels said Delaney brings extensive litigation and government experience to regulatory and compliance matters at the firm.

House Supercommittee Narrowly Rejects Senate-Passed Casino Bill

Members of the so-called casino supercommittee spent its morning getting familiar with 17 separate amendments. The proposals ranged from beefing up regulatory oversight, to changing the way casino proceeds would be distributed among towns and counties, to allowing slot machines at any establishment that holds a liquor license.

But when the committee reconvened after lunch, the first motion came quickly, and it was to kill the bill.

“We may be 45 very bright people, but not one of us has a background in gaming.”

An Eisner Nomination For A New Hampshire Comic Artist

For filmmakers there’s the Oscars, for children’s authors there’s the Newbury Award, and in the world of comics and comic art, there’s the Eisner Awards, named after legendary artist and author Will Eisner.

This year one of the Eisner nominees for Best Publication for Early Readers up to age 7 is Sara Richard, who lives and works here in New Hampshire. She’s nominated for her book “Kitty and Dino.”
