Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney brought his Republican presidential campaign message to the Seacoast.

NHPR Correspondent Roger Wood reports.

In an appearance at the local Rotary Club, the Republican presidential contender covered a wide range of issues.

Romney told the group that he supports affordable and portable health insurance, but not under government sponsorship:

"The last thing we need is Hillary-care. Instead, private insurance - because the market works time and again, you see that throughout this country."

Asked about the war in Iraq, Romney said that he strongly supports the present military strategy - at least for now:

"If it's working, wonderful. If it's not, then we're going to have to take different action. But at this stage, I support the president's troop surge in its effort to try and bring stability to a central government..."

Romney also repeated his stand against abortion rights, and on the very day when New Hampshire lawmakers passed a civil unions bill, the former Massachusetts governor said he'll continue to oppose them.
