The Appalachian Mountain Club just published the 28th edition of the AMC White Mountain Guide, celebrating one-hundred years of the oldest continuously published trail guide in North America, also considered by many to be the bible of hiking in the White Mountains. We'll take a look back at a century of hiking and White Mountain history through the pages of the guide, including historical references to natural disasters such as the hurricanes of 1938 and 1954 and the postponement of trail updates at one point due to a shortage of gasoline and manpower during World War II. We'll also look at the popularity and perils of hiking the Whites...and the problems related to both. John Rudolph guest hosts.

Guests

  • Gene Daniell, Editor for the AMC White Mountain Guide since 1979 and longest serving editor in the guide's history
  • Kevin Breunig, Communications Director for the Appalachian Mountain Club
  • Larry Garland, Cartographer for the AMC White Mountain Guide

Hello, I live in

Hello,
I live in Massachusetts, on the north shore of Boston. My family was involved with the hotel buisness in the White Mountains. I have a large collection of artifacts, and documents pertaining to the "Grand Hotels".
If I can be of any assistance to you please let me know. I will furnish you with copies, of my documents. I have original floor plans as well as letter heads, and personal correspondance between the hotel owners.

Regards,
J.P. Boudreau

As the long-serving editor

As the long-serving editor of the AMC White Mountain Guide, contributing writer to "Appalachia", and Secretary of the NH Four-thousand Footer Club, Gene has probably had the greatest influence on contemporary hiking in New England than any other person. His own accomplishments of hiking New England's peaks and trails are legendary. His knowledge of historical facts and lore are most interesting and seemingly endless.

As the AMC Cartographer, I have known Gene for many years, and was grateful to be able to work with him in creating the first set of digitally composed maps for the AMC White Mountain Guide in the 1990s.

Thanks to Gene for his many years of service to the AMC and the hiking public.
