The City of Portsmouth has a new Mayor.

NHPR correspondent Roger Wood reports on the municipal election.

Tom Ferrini gathered the most votes in the at-large City Council race, handing him the gavel as the city's next mayor.

He'll serve with eight other councilors, many of them new faces - four incumbents chose not to run for reelection.

In all, 18 candidates competed, with council seats going to the top nine vote-getters.

Ferrini, who last served as Assistant Mayor, said that his list of priorities includes keeping a lid on property taxes.

"This council, in the past two years, has been able to keep taxes in line and the increase in taxes has been minimal. We need to continue to do better in that regard. We need to build on what I believe was begun by that council and in particular Mayor Steve Marchand."

Marchand opted out of a reelection run; instead, he launched a race for the U.S. Senate, dropping out when former Governor Jeanne Shaheen announced her candidacy.

First-time candidate Jack Blalock is the new assistant mayor.
