Correspondent Roger Wood is in Rochester with the latest information. He spoke with NHPR's Xenia Piaseckyj.
NHPR's coverage of this event was named 2007 Best Breaking News by the New Hampshire Associated Press Broadcasters Association.
Piaseckyj: As NPR and NHPR have been reporting throughout this afternoon, several volunteers working at Hillary Clinton's campaign headquarters in downtown Rochester were taken hostage today by a man reportedly armed and strapped with an explosive device.
For the latest on this story, NHPR correspondent Roger Wood joins us live from Rochester. Roger, what have you seen?
Wood: I've seen a lot. Hundreds of curious onlookers watching, an entire downtown cordoned off, helicopters circling overhead. The incident apparently unfolded at about 1 o'clock, when a man in his mid 40's walked into the headquarters and ordered two hostages to stay. Apparently he was threatening that he was wearing a bomb but that's not been confirmed.
One hostage has been released, but we can't get confirmation on the second one.
I spoke to a man who's a friend of the family, and the young man ID'ed the person who is the perpetrator of this, but that's not confirmed by police, so I'm not going to say anything more about that. But he was very certain that this man he named to one national news organization was the perpetrator and had a history of emotional and mental problems, and had told his son to watch TV in the afternoon.
The situation is not over - there was an armored personnel carrier just pulling away - here goes another chopper overhead - and police just aren't telling us anything right now, we're all just waiting for any official word. It's really just a word. But what I've told you I believe to be the facts.
Piaseckyj: So it's not yet clear whether the suspect and one other hostage still remains?
Wood: That's not clear. It's certainly not clear that the hostage taker has been taken, and it is unclear as to whether the second hostage has been released. But certainly the hostage taker - I believe - is being talked to by a negotiator.
Piaseckyj: All right. NHPR correspondent Roger Wood live in downtown Rochester. Thank you Roger.
Wood: You're welcome.
