Mitt Romney was gracious as he conceded defeat. He congratulated John McCain for running a first–class race. Using the same turn of speech as he did in Iowa, he told a cheering crowd of supporters that he had won a silver.

Romney promised that he would press on.

CUT I will fight across this nation. On to Michigan and South Carolina and Florida and Nevada // cheers

Romney said that Washington had failed the people. It hadn’t stopped illegal immigration, or reduced the ranks of the uninsured. He said Washington needed an outsider who had proved his abilities elsewhere.

Romney’s supporters expressed confidence that McCain’s victory is a blip and that the Arizona senator lacks the money and organization to run a serious campaign in upcoming states.
