The filing period is over - now the real smiling, hand shaking and stumping begins. This year will be big – there’s a hot U.S. Senate race, two Congressional contests and campaigns for Governor, Executive Council and all 424 seats in the State House and Senate. Where have all the bees gone?

I am a beekeeper from Rhode Island who also is an owner of 26 acres of land in Bridgewater, NH. Last year when clearing for a new road to our new home, a wild hive of honey bees was discovered by our road builder. I saw and photographed the natural hive, but sadly the sawed log in which the hive was found had to be moved and the bees departed. I had planned to bring a hive from RI to capture this native colony and keep bees in NH, but although this did not happen I was encouraged that I may find another colony close by as bees often do not travel far from home, so to speak. There are no other local beekeepers (that I am aware of) so I was pretty convinced this was a natural colony, not a colony that swarmed from a domestic site.
I hope that the state of NH will support loal, backyard beekeepers who can help to bring the bees back as more hives will result in natural swarming and bee multiplication. The main problem I will face as a NH beekeeper is bear locally, and I would appreciate any advice on techniques to keep bear from destroying hives.
