What's Your Favorite Summer Recipe?

By Avishay Artsy on Tuesday, July 8, 2008.

'Tis the season for delicious cooking, fresh from the garden.

My green thumb is itching, and I've just started using it. After years of city living, this spring I finally moved to a place with a decent-sized yard (and conveniently, the neighbor had already cleared a garden patch).

Inspired by spiking food prices and a segment Word of Mouth aired in April on edible lawns, near the end of May I visited a nearby garden supply store and loaded up on little pots filled with soil and barely-sprouting seeds. I picked out what I thought I'd eat most: tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, peas, strawberries, mint, basil, and a few others.

Barely over a month later, I'm astonished at how fast my plants are coming in! Within another month I'll be benefiting from all the weeding and watering with handfuls of veggies and herbs. Now I'm faced with a dilemma: What should I make with all this garden-fresh produce?

I've scoured the food blogosphere for ideas, and have come up with some delicious suggestions: a spring vegetable stew, mojito granitas, a transcendent summer tomato salad (pictured above), lavender sorbet, and simple vegetable gratin just begin to approximate the myriad recipes swirling around that incorporate food from the garden or farmer's market.

So, what's your favorite summer recipe?

Yum...peas and mint are a classic combo, as are tomatoes and basil. If you like goat cheese, try a quick saute of the tomatoes with a small amount of chopped garlic in olive oil, then toss with just-cooked angel hair pasta and soft goat cheese and a handful of sliced basil. The goat cheese melts and makes a wonderful sauce...mmmm. Grilled peppers make a nice side dish for any grilled meats--try with grilled zucchini, grilled onions and feta cheese (olive oil and oregano are nice in this mix).

Simple is best for fresh produce, it lets the flavor come through.

Yum.
