The New Concorde

By Jacob Eaton on Friday, October 24, 2008.

In its prime, the famed supersonic Concorde jet could get you from New York to London in less than half the time it took regular air carriers to travel the same distance. However, as a result of the plane’s only crash in July of 2000, as well as difficult mechanical upkeep, the airline shut down in 2003.

A new company, however, hopes to incorporate the Concorde’s famed design into a new supersonic airline that can travel between New York in London in three hours. The Aerion Supersonic Jet uses the same pencil shaped design as the Concorde to reach a top speed of mach 1.6, though in a significantly smaller size.

The Aerion’s manufacturer, Aerion Corporation, hopes to begin testing the design by 2012, and over 50 companies have paid the £150,000 to look into producing the design.
