State Senate May Be First Female-Majority Legislative Body in US
By Dan Gorenstein on Wednesday, November 5, 2008.
The nation made history last night in electing the first African American President. It turns out, the New Hampshire state Senate made history too. New Hampshire Public Radio's Dan Gorenstein has more. According to members of the Democratic Party, the New Hampshire Senate holds the honor of being the first federal or state legislative body to be made up primarily of women. Eleven Democratic women and two Republicans will hold 13 of the 24 State Senate seats. Currently ten state senators are female. Both Nashua senators-elect, Democrat Peggy Gilmour and Democrat Bette Lasky, replace two men. Republican Sharon Carson replaces Bob Clegg. Both the Senate president and the Speaker of the House are women. For NHPR News, I'm Dan Gorenstein. More From NHPR Post a comment
