"G-Speak" Brings Minority Report's Computers to Life

By Avishay Artsy on Monday, November 17, 2008.

An inside joke at Word of Mouth is our use of audio clips from the Steven Spielberg film Minority Report in just about every segment involving some new-fangled advanced technology. From predicting college dropouts (but without the PreCogs) to sci-fi supermarkets in which shoppers are individually targeted with audio advertisements, we see reminders of the film everywhere in our evolving electronic age.

Well, it looks like another part of the movie has finally come to fruition. Remember when Tom Cruise stares at a wall-size computer monitor, waves his arms in the air and drags items between screens using glove controllers? One of the film's science advisers was involved in creating a real-world implementation of that system. Dubbed g-speak, the mind bending operating system combines "gestural i/o, recombinant networking, and real-world pixels," to deliver what the creators call "the first major step in [a] computer interface since 1984." Watch the video above, and prepare to have your mind thoroughly blown to bits. [via Engadget]
