Thanks Andrew

By Virginia Prescott on Thursday, January 22, 2009.

One of the greatest joys in creating this show has been working with Senior Producer Andrew Walsh. For years, Andrew carried the vision for a program of interesting conversations that incorporated the way people interact online and the sound and energy that happens only on live radio.

It's a tough mandate for a small crew, but Andrew Walsh's leadership, intelligence and dogged work made it happen. In nearly 20 years of work in radio, I've rarely met a person with Andrew's combination of attuned radio ear and instinct for managing people. In addition, he is perhaps the funniest person I've ever met.

Andrew is following his partner to Seattle, where she'll be gainfully employed, and he'll be a talented and exceptionally sharp producer for hire. We are convinced that he'll get snatched up quickly, and that whoever lands him will adore him as we do.

We wish you well, Andrew, and will miss you more than words can say. So we'll leave you with this.

so much! rock and roll and the best of luck-

Hey, nice work on that whole "creating a new show" thing.

I will miss you Andrew...especially during the fundraisers. You made crawling into the office at 5:30am fun and entertaining. I wish nothing but the best for you in the years to come. NH is losing a wonderful soul.

It has been so much fun working with you, the late night talks, the love of radio producing, the snarky comments and the half decade of ugly shirts and haircuts to fuel my humor. Your talent and personality will be greatly missed.

Andrew,

Congratulations on helping launch public radio's best new show! I wouldn't be at NHPR without you, and I want you to know how much I appreciate that. Good luck to you in Seattle!

-Dan

I've seen a lot of public radio shows come and go and it's very impressive to see one that had a clear vision from the start and was able to hit the air and sustain itself with that vision intact. Without Andrew, it would never have happened. Our loss is Seattle's gain. Andrew, I know we'll be hearing your work again.

Virginia, you list Andrew's many worthy qualities. You forgot to mention his hair syle.

Andrew, I want that sweater.

It's been an incredible experience working with you. For me, this past year has been a crash course in producing live radio, and your vision and creativity is what has made this show special. Thanks for all the guidance, inspiration, and pretzel rods. Keep it classy in Seattle.

In addition to launching Word of Mouth, Andrew is one of the finest pledge drive producers any of us has ever known, helping the people on the air sound friendly and intelligent. His secret? Andrew would give out points if one of us said something extremely intelligent or fun or friendly.

I confess I didn't get a lot of those points (I actually wound up in negative territory most days) but it kept everybody loose and fun.

A thousand points to you, sir, and keep in touch!

Andrew, I haven't known you long but it's been such a pleasure. Your enthusiasm, wit, and intelligence just shine -- and we'll miss you. And like Dan, I wouldn't be here if it hadn't been for you, so thank you, thank you -- and don't go!
Elaine

Wish you the best in Seattle, You have been really helpful as far as your input and tips.

Take Care

andrew, you had me organize the archives for the front porch (all of them), get water for guests, introduced me to joe biden, had me call the totally fierce maxine kumin and melanie rehak and even got me to suck it up and ask for a free copy of girl sleuth. i will forever be indebted, journalistically. i just puked a little in my mouth with nostalgia. Have an amazing time in Seattle doing awesome stuff. Oley.

Andrew-Z I love your sense of humor and I will miss you bunches. I'll miss your friendly good morning every day and you giving me a good natured ribbing from time to time. You have been a wonderful asset to NHPR. I wish you good luck and nothing but the best. D

Andrew, we will miss you. No, really, we will. But our aim will get better, so watch out...
Seriously, though, best wishes to you in all you do. Enjoy the great NorthWest - Can it really be all that much different than the NorthEast? In fact, Curt Cobain almost setup shop in Wells, Maine before he decided he needed more Starbucks than the West-East coffee pipeline at that time could supply. And watch out for Bill Gates - I hear he is quite a trickster.

Good luck and the very best wishes, Andrew. May your beard thrive.

Andrew,
It has been a pleasure and fun working with a professional like yourself. Your skills and personality will be greatly missed at NHPR. Good luck with your future ventures.
Dan C.

Andrew has done a really fine job shaping Word of Mouth. I know he'll be missed there. I can also say I'll miss Mr. Walsh. Several years ago, he and I worked together on the station's early morning show. He was always cheerful and helpful. I'm sure he'll do well in Seattle. The city may not be the same after he arrives.....

Andrew, you have created an extraordinary program here in New Hampshire and I'm certain you'll be a part of transmitting something spectacular in Seattle as well. I am having a difficult time figuring out which words to best leave you with, so I will allow the Spice Girls to act as my surrogate:

All: Goodbye My Friend
(I know you're gone you said you're gone but I can still feel you here)
It's not the end
(you gotta keep strong before the pain turns into fear)

Sporty: So glad we made it time will never change it no no no
All: no no no no
Sporty: you know it's time to say goodbye

Posh: the times when we would play about
the way we used to scream and shout
never dreamt you'd go your own sweet way

Scary: look for the rainbow in every storm
find out for certain
love is gonna be there for you
you'll always be someone's baby

Good Luck Andrew! You've been a joy to work with and an amazing mentor!

Andrew:
Your presence, your guidance and your daily doses cynicism and sarcasm will be sorely missed here in the Word of Mouth nook. Thank you for creating such a wonderful show to work on and for teaching me the ropes of radio - so much of what I know, I owe to you. Best of luck as you embark on your new life as a Washingtonian. Try not to forget us.

Keep it real homie

I'm keeping my ears open for you.

Thanks for the mentor-ish help, and thanks for the wonderful radio.

In the words of your secret admirer Tina Turner, Andrew..."you're simply the best!"

The left coast will be a better place because of you, and the east will be sad without you. Your great talent and work jones will surely mean only good things for your future.

Bon voyage, break a leg, and thanks for everything!

Liz

Who am I going to get pretzels for if you're gone? I hope wherever you land in Seattle knows how lucky they are! We'll miss you - your skills, your genius, your modesty and your humor! Good luck, stay dry and come back - at least to visit!

Thank you for your kindness, humor and energy! It was a pleasure bumping into you on Sundays! I wish you all the best. kate

I can't say it any better than Ian Anderson...except perhaps saying "Risotto!"
Love,
V

PS: You should have that Kelly Horan lady host again

Andrew - When you return for a visit, I'd love a real Seattle coffee! (cream, no sugar.) Thanks for all you've contributed!

Andrew,

I hope the show can retain its edgy coolness without you. I have my doubts.

Good luck in Seattle. I'll keep my ears open for your work.

Amy A.

You put the "fun" in fundraising. Thank you for being such a consummate profesional and such a great pleasure to work with. You will be missed.

-- Sally

Gonna miss you, Andrew! You've done great things at NHPR, and I suspect, it was all a dress rehersal for Seattle.
- Pete

I'll always remember finding another admirer of "homies". Take care and keep in touch!

-mark

Andrew, we talked about this. The very idea that you would leave NH in January for the West Coast is just crazy talk. You are one of the foundations of NHPR now, and we will miss you terribly (horribly even). I do have some filing and data entry you can do as a freelancer. No worries, we'll set you up.

Take care. Good luck. Don't trip.

Andrew! Remember that Chinese restaurant meal we all had when we were interviewing you? We laughed and laughed and Mary and I decided, yup -this could be fun. I'm so glad I was able to be a small part of your career here at NHPR. You are a super-talented guy and I wish you all the very, very best. You will be much-missed.

Laura

Andrew, you will be missed by many. You always made me laugh when you poked your head around the corner and said hi to the lonely intern on the other side of the cubicle. Thanks for all your hard work!

aww SHUCKS. you guys are the best. i'm flattered, to say the least. i'm not sure i'm as great a guy as you say i am...but i'll take it!

Andrew is the most driven person I've ever met. Driven to rock, that is! ...and be the best radio producer he can be...

He will (and should) be missed by not just the staff of NHPR, but its listeners as well.

However, NHPR's loss is my gain, as he will once again be my neighbor (let's not get into the technicalities of the proximity of Portland, OR to Seattle, WA..).

Well done Andrew!

We never did get together for dinner (at least that's the story I'm sticking to) during all those years. Now it looks like it's not going to happen.

It's been a good time and as I've already said, I'm going to miss you.

Enjoy your new adventure. And keep in touch.

Best of luck,
Mark

We never stopped missing you. And we never will.

Since your days at WKSU we knew you were going places. Just wish it wasn't so far.

I had a teacher/mentor who once told me that
when we create spaces in our lives, they can be filled with the most unexpected surprises. And when we are open to these, we can find new and exciting paths that we never thought were possible.
I have always held on to that advice and have trusted and believed that its true.
Maybe it will be of some use to you as you move on to your next adventure.
Good luck in Seattle.
I am and always will be honored to carry the title of your first boss!!
Mary

As a guest on the Word Of Mouth, I was very much impressed with Andrew's 'vetting' of me and the topic at hand - which was unknown to him previous to our conversation.

He made a great impression on me in a short time. Best of luck in the Northwest.

This is a real bummer. Your Christmas day music special was my favorite show of the whole season! Maybe we can have a reprise "live from Seattle"?

Seattle's gain is definitely New Hampshire's loss!

Really sad to see you go, Andrew. I sincerely enjoyed the humorous banter we had on the too-few occasions when our paths crossed in the hallowed halls of the "old building." Best of luck to you and the wife! Might not hurt to invest in a good umbrella, I hear.

Weekend guy Dan M.

Thanks for inspiring us to talk high-brow about all the low-brow things we love. Welcome to our coast.
