The Art of Field Recording

Mother Mitchell plays the piano

The Grammy Awards are coming up on Sunday, and while Coldplay, Lil Wayne and Radiohead may get the biggest headlines, don’t forget about Sister Fleeta Mitchell, or the Old Threshers’ Fife and Drum Band. They’re among the artists gathered on the “Art of Field Recording, Volume One” boxed set. It’s nominated for Best Album Notes, and for Best Historical Album.

The set was compiled by Art Rosenbaum, who’s become a kind of Indiana Jones of traditional American folk music. Independent producer Philip Graitcer
traveled with Rosenbaum to visit a few of the musicians, and brings us this story.

You can hear the piece at the Public Radio Exchange.
