Who Needs Newspapers?

While newspapers struggle to stay afloat, entrepreneurs are creating new models for journalism. Word of Mouth has spoken to the folks at SpotUs News, a service allowing citizens to decide which stories they want pursued, and then donate money to pay for those stories.

Another idea launched early this year: Global Post, which aims to offer in-depth international reporting while most major news operations shutter their foreign bureaus.

These are the types of initiatives that make media critic Jeff Jarvis smile. Jeff blogs about the news industry at Buzzmachine.com. He’s also associate professor and director of the Interactive Journalism Program at City University of New York. His book What Would Google Do hit stores earlier this year, and he joins us now to make the case for saving journalism over the newspaper industry.
