A Shorter Work Week

Work weekAmericans have long been known as some of the hardest workers in the West. We put in longer hours and take fewer vacations than our European counterparts. But as layoffs grow in numbers, some thinkers are questioning the 40-hour work week, arguing that shorter work weeks could help companies avoid traditional layoffs. Can a country that scoffs at “social safety nets” ever embrace such an idea?

Our guest, Heather Boushey thinks so. She’s a senior economist with the Center for American Progress and an advocate for the shorter work week.
