Lawmakers Compromise on Gay Marriage

By Dan Gorenstein on Friday, May 29, 2009.

Gay marriage continues to inch closer to becoming a reality in the state.

New Hampshire Public Radio’s Dan Gorenstein has more.

House and Senate negotiators have reached a compromise on language that will permit same-sex marriage.

The changes were not substantive, but reiterated that religious groups do not have to perform or participate in wedding ceremonies that go against their beliefs.

A little over a week ago, the House narrowly defeated a similar measure requested by Governor John Lynch.

Prior to signing off on the proposal lawmakers consulted the Governor.

According to a spokesperson Lynch will sign gay marriage into law provided the Legislature makes no additional changes.

The measure now goes back to the House.

Both opponents and supporters agree the vote will be close.
