David Lynch Presents...
By Deb Baker on Friday, June 26, 2009.
![]() On a 20,000 mile road trip over more than two months, filmmakers Jason S. and Austin Lynch, son of David Lynch, met and interviewed hundreds of people in ordinary places across America, to create Interview Project. Viewers get what Newsweek’s Marc Bain calls a "glancing few minutes" with each subject, but as David Lynch says in the video introduction, the series is "a chance to meet these people. It’s something that’s human." Wired's Hugh Hart notes that the filmmakers asked "probing" questions in their conversations, and the resulting three to five minute videos are remarkably personal and revealing, despite their simple, unscripted style. Short commentaries accompany each piece on the website, and it’s clear the documentary team enjoyed getting to know the people they discovered on the road. New episodes will be published every three days for a year. David Lynch adds a kind of grandfatherly benediction to the project with his short, folksy introductions to the films, which are more grounded in realism than much of his own work. The pieces I watched presented subjects speaking to the filmmakers in their own neighborhoods – spare but compelling glimpses into lives, and into our collective American life.
