Dumpster Diving

Remember when Rob Walker joined us to talk about Unconsumption, a project dedicated to the second lives of everyday products? Well, I think he’d dig this: Some resourceful would-be beach bums around the world are turning old dumpsters into urban swimming pools.

The crazy kids at Macro|Sea are doing it in New York.

Designer Oliver Bishop-Young is doing it over in England.

And the band Pylon reportedly did it in Georgia a while back.

This could be a great way to beat the heat this summer if you have an extra dumpster, a little design experience, and a whole heck of a lot of insurance.

(By the way, we asked the folks at Macro|Sea to join us on the show to talk about this, but they politely declined. They said the project is already getting too much publicicity. So, uh, you didn't read about this here, okay?)
