Put Me In, Coach

By Todd Bookman on Tuesday, July 14, 2009.

Tonight, the boys of summer take the field in St. Louis to play in baseball’s annual all-star game. Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield is playing in his first all-star game after seventeen-years in the majors. He’s looking to help the American league continue its streak of 12-straight wins over the National league.

Steroid scandals again marred the first half of the season, from A-rod’s admission to Manny’s 50-game suspension. Athletes use performance-enhancing drugs to help them play through pain and recover faster. Some analysts say this year’s surge in injuries is due to players giving up steroids for fear of being caught. A jump in stolen bases and a dip in total home runs may be more proof that drug-free baseball is back.
