A Special on Sustainability

By Avishay Artsy on Monday, August 10, 2009.

Today on Word of Mouth, we're listening to a special presentation on sustainability from the Purdue University College of Engineering. This one-hour special is hosted by Barbara Bogaev and produced by Richard Paul. Scientists, developers start-ups, and citizens across the country are working to create a sustainable future.

It leads you to some promising projects, including a solar cell that works at night and when it’s raining. She rolls open plans for a sidewalk that can suck CO2 right out of the air. And you’ll hear about some regular folks – from suburban families to new home buyers – who are integrating sustainable habits into every day life.

Barbara looks in on an environmentally friendly housing development, and on a busy working mom who’s keeping careful track of a typical day’s consumption. Plus, an investigation of just how much energy a computer uses from the moment it leaves the factory floor to the day it finally bites the dust.
