Fahrenheit 451 Gets The Graphic Novel Treatment

By Zach Johnk on Monday, August 24, 2009.

Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury’s classic about a book-burning society, is nearing its sixtieth birthday. But its legacy lives on.

In July, an adaptation of the dystopian tale was released in a new form — a comic book. Artist Tim Hamilton brought the protagonist Guy Montag to life in a 160-page graphic novel. It may seem like dark humor; after all, comic books were the only publications spared in the original Fahrenheit 451.

But Hamilton is serious about the work, which comes at a time when the world is rapidly shifting away from printed books of any kind. Ray Bradbury himself may have noticed this trend — he wrote the introduction for the new comic book.

Slate: Is it time to burn this book?
