The Solitary Life of Cranes

By Avishay Artsy on Friday, August 28, 2009.

High above the city, crane drivers have a bird's-eye view of the hustle and bustle of urban life. From their perch, they are removed from the city as they build it. They imagine the lives of strangers as they observe their daily routines. They sit mostly in silence as they take in the patterns and hidden secrets of the city.

Beginning with the crane drivers making their ascent at dawn, and ending after a nightshift, The Solitary Life of Cranes explores the daily ebb and flow of city life, from the burst of activity as it awakens, to the midday quiet, to the manic evening rush, and finally the nighttime calm.

Directed by Eva Weber, the film was selected as one of the top five films of 2008 by critic Nick Bradshaw in Sight & Sound magazine's annual film review. [via bldgblog]
