The History of American Partisanship

By Laura Knoy on Sunday, September 27, 2009.

We’re joined by the American History Guys, hosts of the NPR program BackStory. We’ll dig into our country’s long tradition of partisan battles. From the Federalists and Whigs to today’s disputes between Republicans and Democrats, we’ll look at what’s been at the core of American partisanship and how it’s changed.

Guests

  • Peter Onuf, Backstory’s 18th Century Guy and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Professor of History at the University of Virginia
  • Ed Ayers, Backstory’s 19th Century Guy and President of the University of Richmond
  • Brian Balogh, Backstory’s 20th Century Guy and the Mayo Distinguished Teaching Professor of History at the University of Virginia

Thank you!

I usually watch the Olbermann show or comedy central, but everyone there seems they'd taken the night off last night, so I decided to listen to the radio and by chance caught the show last night. This was TONS better than anything I would have watched, so I'm really glad I surfed the radio and caught the show. Very informative.

Note: You get bonus points for mentioning Ralph Nader, since I'm a loyal Naderite. :-)
