Working It Out Live

By Jon Greenberg on Friday, October 9, 2009.

The real story of the economy is your story. Post yours here.

Go from place to place around New Hampshire and ask people about the economy: it can be like the old story about the blind man and the elephant: depending on which part of the economy you touch, it can feel completely different. Some people seem largely unaffected by the downturn, while others struggle to keep their lives together. In our new monthly live program, we'll hear a range of perspectives on the economy- those who are genuinely enthusiastic about new opportunities, the many ways a person can have a job and still be in deep economic trouble, and why it's not the greatest thing to be the last car dealer left standing in a town.

economy effecting my family

I have seen the effects of the economy through my family. Both my parents luckily have kept their jobs with the same pay, however my dad has only recieved one out of the 4 bonuses they usually get during a year. Also my brother who works with my dad has been laid off but luckily because my uncle is his boss he has found odd jobs for him to do around his own house until he leaves for boot camp so he has money until then. Luckily the economy has not had a huge effect on my family but we still try and conserve engery/gas/food/ etc. the best we can.

Working It Out

My husband's salary was cut 10% just as he was up for his annual review. As a result, we've cut back on going out and cancelled our gym membership. We've ben more careful about the purchases we do make, trying to make the most of sales and coupons. Our family is all about 100 miles away. We make fewer trips to see them to keep our gas and tolls expenses down, but this means our 18 month old son doesn't get to see his grandparents and great grandparents as often.
My Dad was transfered in April and my parents, have had their house on the market for 8 months with no offers. It is a gorgeous house in a great area, but people aren't buying property. To keep expenses low, my Dad has been staying with us, rather than renting an apartment since we're only 30 minutes from his new job instead of 2 hours.
