Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua
By Deborah Schachter on Friday, October 23, 2009.
When Adolfo Ramirez came to the United States at age 15, he spoke no English and struggled to catch up with his peers in school. He joined the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua, where he got help with homework and language skills. A friend of mine, he recommended me to go to the Boys and Girls club. Everyday after school as soon as I got off the bus I went straight to the homework room because I was very eager to finish my homework, and of course to be able to go down to the gym and shoot some hoops. It was great. If it wasn’t for the boys and girls Club I don’t think would have been able to find all the opportunities that came to me, such as the way to college. There were programs in which they’ll bring us to a college and show us a college. Recently, I graduated Keene State College. My mom attended graduation. Graduation started at 10:00 and she was already there at 6:30 in the morning knocking on my dorm door. I got her a front row chair, and throughout the ceremony until the end of graduation she was in tears. It was a great day at graduation. It felt like a dream. I did join ROTC while in college. Right after graduation I went to Washington state. At the end of training I got commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. I’m going to quote the Keene State motto that it says at the entrance of the college, “Enter to Learn, Go forth to Serve”. That’s what I believe the Boys and Girls Club did for me. Post a comment
