Harvesting History

By Rick Ganley on Friday, October 23, 2009.

As we near Halloween, we look at some walking tours and places in New Hampshire to catch the spirit and a history lesson. The Hippo's Amy Diaz joins Rick Ganley to talk about what's happening this weekend.

Manchester City Library is hosting a cemetery scavenger hunt for kids and families at the Valley Street Cemetery. Amy says the 19th century cemetery is designed as much for the living as the dead - it's built "to be used by the community," so kids will be looking for the tallest monument and oldest tombstone as they pore through local history.

Amy also recommends Historic Portsmouth Legends and Ghost Walks as a way to learn the "secret hidden histories" of the area with a seasonal twist.

It's also corn maze season; Amy recently visited the Coppal House Farm corn maze in Lee, whose maze is shaped like a different animal each year.
