State Senator Mulls Resignation

By Dan Gorenstein on Wednesday, November 4, 2009.

Ted Gatsas is looking into when he should resign his state Senate seat.

New Hampshire Public Radio’s Dan Gorenstein reports.

Republican Senator Ted Gatsas says he’s talking with the Secretary of State and the Attorney General’s office about resigning his seat now that he’s to become Manchester’s next mayor.

The process is fairly straightforward.

Gatsas has to file a formal letter with the Senate President who would then send it along to the Governor and Executive Council.

The Council has 21 days to set an election date, and that date must be within 80-some days of the day they make their decision.

If there is a primary, it must be held 35 days before the special election.

Right now, Republican state Representative David Boutin from Hooksett and Democratic state Representative Jeff Goley of Manchester are in.

Former state Representative Republican Terry Pfaff also from Hooksett is rumored to be interested.

If Gatsas formally resigned this week, the Secretary of State says the soonest an election could be held would be January 12th.
