Athletes Doping
By Laura Knoy on Thursday, July 15, 2004.
As the Olympic Track and Field trials got underway last week, the biggest story was not about who's breaking records, but who's using illegal drugs. Seven of the sports athletes, including some of the most famous, like Marion Jones, are under suspicion for doping and some observers say its threatening to put a bad name on the entire sport. But track and field is not the only sport where big-time athletes are believed to be using performance enhancing drugs. We'll talk about just how widespread doping is and how the authorities are changing the way they crack down. Laura's guests are Dr. John Hoberman, professor at the University of Texas and author of several books on sports and doping and Vin Sylvia, deputy managing editor for sports at the Union Leader. We will also talk with Brian Cazeneuve, Olympic writer for Sports Illustrated.
