Virginia Prescott

Host, Word of Mouth

Prior to joining NHPR, Virginia Prescott was editor and producer for the nationally syndicated programs On Point and Here & Now, produced at WBUR in Boston. Virginia grew up in New Hampshire, but began her radio career at WWOZ Radio in New Orleans. She moved to New York City and worked for the team behind NPR’s Peabody Award-winning Jazz from Lincoln Center series with Ed Bradley. Virginia then joined WNYC to launch the station’s website and oversee all its interactive media sites. Throughout her radio career, Virginia helped set up independent radio stations in developing regions in southern and West Africa. She has also trained journalists in post-conflict zones from Sierra Leone to the former Yugoslavia. She was awarded a Loeb Fellowship at Harvard University where she studied how broadcast media could spark dialogue and build community across terrestrial borders.

Businesses with Bennies

News last month that trading losses at JP Morgan chase may be much larger than previously reported – possibly topping nine billion dollars. The number provides ammo for advocates of more stringent financial regulations… and for 99 percenters, proof that  corporate greed is running amok…and running the system. A number of progressive, socially responsible corporations are seeking designation as b-corps – or benefit corporations. Several states have already legislated incentives for B-Corps.

How a Preemie Changes Everything

Kasey Mathews seemed to have a perfect life. Terrific husband, a place in the suburbs, an adorable son with another baby on the way. Her nicely placed plans for a second child went awry when her daughter, Andie, was born at just 25 weeks, weighing under just under 2 pounds. The traumatic birth launched her family into an emotional and logistical wringer through surgeries and scares that did not end when her tiny baby came home.

#SCOTUS Scholar Breaks it Down

(Photo by s_falkow via Flickr Creative Commons)

Working in a newsroom when you know a story is about to break can make for an exciting morning…today, of course, it’s been all about the supreme court’s health care decision.

While the anticipation about the court’s ruling on "Obamacare" was a nailbiter for citizens and journalists, it no doubt played quite differently inside the cloistered chambers of the nation’s highest court. It was back in March that the justices heard three days of heated arguments on both sides of the law, which, for the record, is actually called “The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.”

What if that carrot ISN'T just a carrot?

In 1968, L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Church of Scientology, declared as the result of a scientific experiment an unusual and disturbing notion: that tomatoes scream when sliced.  However strange his declaration may have seemed, Hubbard is in good company when it comes to prodding garden produce in search of an emotional response.

Granito: How to Nail a Dictator

Pamela Yates was a young, idealistic filmmaker when she went to Guatemala in 1982 to make a documentary about a hidden war. 200,000 people were murdered in the Guatemalan conflict, many indigenous people living in the highlands. Pamela and her colleagues met guerilla fighters, and tagged along on army sweeps…she even interviewed then President of the Republic, General Efrain Rios Montt.

Take A Picture of Your Birth...It Will Last Longer

Digital cameras are everywhere…documenting everything from mundane meals to cute things kids do. There are still a few high-stakes events that warrant the sticker price of a professional shutterbug: weddings of course, school portraits, and – for a new generation of open-minded Mommies and Daddies – births.
