The New Hampshire Fish and Game Commission is expressing "serious disagreement" with Governor Chris Sununu's decision to halt long-standing plans for a public boat-access site on Lake Sunapee.
Plans for the site on the lake’s southwestern shore have been in the works for over two decades. In July, Sununu pulled the plug, saying "Enough is enough," and citing environmental and traffic concerns from nearby residents.
Now, the Fish and Game Commission is pushing back with a public letter, urging the governor to reconsider. The commission argues New Hampshire is required by law to provide public access to state waters, and hundreds of thousands of dollars of state funds have already been invested in the project.
“There’s just a few individuals that live on Sunapee that, in my opinion, are trying to keep the lake to themselves,” said Commission Chair Ted Tichy.
It’s unclear what will happen next with the project. In a statement Tuesday, Sununu's office said the governor is "determined to bring forward a feasible proposal that won’t stall for another twenty years."
