Members of the community surrounding the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Charleston, S.C. are grieving for the nine people killed Wednesday night during a prayer meeting.

The church’s head pastor, Clementa Pinckney, who was also a state senator and civil rights activist, was among the dead, according to police.

Elder James Johnson of the National Action Network knew Rev. Pinckney and spoke with Here & Now’s Robin Young from outside of the church to remember the victims of the shooting.
