Clinton Rolls Out $350 Billion College Affordability Plan

josh rogers/nhpr

Hillary Clinton told a crowd at Exeter high school she wants students to be able to attend public colleges and universities without taking out loans.

She said she’d create incentives for states to spend more on education and for colleges to control their spending. And she wants to allow people carrying student debt to refinance.

“This is just common sense. If you are going to hear people talking about improving the economy, helping incomes rise, then ask them about what they are going to do to make college affordable, and help them with the debt burden that is holding too many Americans back.”

Clinton proposes capping itemized tax deductions for the wealthy to help pay for her plan, which would also call for students to work ten hours a week. Fellow Democrats Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley have already released plans aimed at reducing the cost of higher education. Sanders proposes taxing activity on Wall Street to make public college tuition free.
