Crews are working to repair a major water main break in Manchester.
City water technician John St. Pierre says the 24-inch pipe burst early Thursday morning.
“We’ve located where the break was, we’ve excavated down to it, and we’re in the process of cutting the pipe and splicing in a new piece of pipe to repair the issue," he said. "We’ll be out there working throughout the day and then the highway department will be out there repairing the road.”
The break caused extensive damage and several roads in the area of the Bridge Street Extension are closed.
The pipe is one of two that supplies water to the city’s reserve tanks.
City officials are encouraging residents to suspend all non-emergency water use.
“Hopefully by the this afternoon at some point we’ll have the water flowing again, but then we need to be able to build up our reserve in the tanks again," St. Pierre said. "We’re just asking people if they can to conserve water."
