Defeated Ayotte Talks Russia, Stays Mum on Political Future

Chris Jensen for NHPR

Defeated Republican U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte says U.S. politicians needs to remember that Russian President Vladimir Putin "is not our friend."

Ayotte commented on current events and the tenure in the Senate during a Sunday interview with WMUR-TV, one of her first major interviews since losing the election.

Ayotte won't be in the Senate when it comes time to approve Republican President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet positions. But she says there are some "real questions" about Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson's relationship with Putin. She also says Tillerson has "tremendous qualifications" for the job.

Ayotte narrowly lost re-election to Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan in November. She says she hasn't decided what's next in her political and professional future.
