George R.R. Martin Has Novel Way To Raise Money For Charities

DAVID GREENE, HOST:

And now a quick shout-out to "Game Of Thrones" fans. No spoilers, I promise. If you're among the millions of viewers who tune into the HBO series each week, despite the horrifying death its main characters keep suffering, you're going to love this. George R.R. Martin, who wrote the books the series is based on, is fundraising for a couple of his favorite charities, the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot of Santa Fe, New Mexico. For $20,000, you can have a character named after you in a future Martin novel. And he promises your character will certainly meet a grisly death. If that price tag seems high, in a Youtube video, Martin revealed these added deal sweeteners.

GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: How'd you like to spend a day with me? Fly you in from anywhere in the world to Santa Fe, New Mexico, my hometown. We'll have a great dinner together. The next day, we'll take a helicopter ride from Santa Fe right here to Candy Kitchen. We'll visit the sanctuary. We'll see the wolves, and along the way, we can talk about dragons, direwolves, "Game Of Thrones," wild card, anything you want talk about.

GREENE: Anything you want to talk about or rants about, like how you could kill off - oh, that's right. Forgot, no spoilers. I promised. It's MORNING EDITION from NPR News. I'm David Greene. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
