Hanover Considers Requiring Bear-Proof Trash Containers

Bears have been a major headache in Hanover this spring. One mother bear and her three yearlings, in particular, became well known to residents for their aggressive behavior. The animals are attracted to unsecured dumpsters and residential garbage cans.

Hanover is now considering requiring that all trash to be stored in bear-proof containers, said Town Manager Julia Griffin. Also under consideration is a requirement that trash and recycling be put out for collection in the morning, rather than the night before.

Griffin says garbage around off-campus student housing has been a particular challenge, and the town is working with Dartmouth College to address the problem.
