A senior at Hanover High School is the recipient of a prestigious scholarship handed out to only one student in the country.
Katherine Chen learned she won the John M. Stalnaker Memorial Scholarship a month ago, but she could only tell her immediate family until it was made public on Wednesday.
The National Merit Scholarship gives out the twenty thousand dollar scholarship to a student who is planning to study math or science.
Chen says she the award came as a surprise.
“They give out I believe about two thousand of these twenty-five hundred dollar scholarships, so I knew I was in consideration for that. But they also have this special scholarship, which was really exciting.”
Chen says she will attend Harvard University in the fall, where she plans to study applied math or statistics.
