Hassan, GOP Leaders Push For Budget Deal As 'Veto Day' Nears

NHPR Staff

Nearly three months into the state's budget stalemate, Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan and top Republican lawmakers are trying to forge a compromise as a new deadline approaches.

The Legislature returns to Concord on Wednesday for override votes on 10 bills Hassan vetoed, including two dealing with the budget. Republicans don't have enough votes to override the budget vetoes, forcing both sides to seek a compromise that will put the state on stable financial footing.

The state is now operating on a short-term spending plan that is causing headaches for state agencies and leaving social service programs without expected funding increases.

Business tax cuts sought by Republicans remain at the center of the dispute, but both sides say they're hopeful for compromise by Wednesday.
