Hassan Vetoes End-Of-Life, Constitutional Convention Bills

Allegra Boverman for NHPR

Gov. Maggie Hassan has vetoed bills establishing a committee to study end-of-life decisions and limiting the authority of delegates to a federal constitutional convention.

Hassan, who vetoed a similar end-of-life bill in 2013, said Tuesday it failed to address membership that lacks a broad cross-section of people in the medical community, patients, advocates for the elderly and people with disabilities, and the religious community.

Regarding the constitutional convention bill, she agreed with then-Gov. John Lynch, who vetoed a similar measure in 2012, saying no convention is imminent.

Hassan said the bill's language places restrictions on hypothetical delegates that are contrary to the true purpose of any constitutional convention and if they had been in place in 1787, "our Founders may very well have never created the United States Constitution."
