Authorities say a Maine hiker has died after suffering a medical emergency while climbing New Hampshire's Mount Jefferson.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department says 63-year-old Gregory Larson was stricken Friday afternoon near the summit of the 5,712-foot mountain. His companions performed CPR while rescue hikers and a hospital helicopter were dispatched to help.

Officials say the helicopter was unable to land on the difficult, steep terrain but a National Guard helicopter was able to hoist the Bridgton, Maine man off the mountain. The wildlife department says Larson died during the rescue effort.

Conservation Officer Sergeant Mark Ober said the efforts taken by Larson's companions and rescuers on foot and by air were commendable.
